Internews Network: Journalism of Hope - Afghanistan

Afghans all over the world can keep connected with their country through a unique web site - Afghan Radio Connect - that gives them access to local news from Afghanistan’s 33 local radio stations.

The Afghan Radio Connect project, which recently won a Manthan award for Excellence and Innovation in ICT, started in January 2007. Nai, an organisation supporting open media in Aghanistan and Internews joined hands to develop this concept. The Afghan Radio Connect website allows listeners to find radio stations via a map or the station name or by subscribing to the RSS feed and newsletter.

With 47 journalists in jail, Iran sets notorious records

New York, February 3, 2010—Iranian authorities are now holding at least 47 journalists in prison, more than any single country has imprisoned since 1996, according to a new survey by the Committee to Protect Journalists. While many of the detainees were arrested in the aftermath of the disputed June presidential election, CPJ’s survey found that authorities are continuing to wage an aggressive campaign to round up independent and opposition journalists. At least 26 journalists have been jailed in the last two months alone, CPJ found.

A Media Academy Grows in Bangladesh

A few months ago I received a call from Dr. Shahidul Alam, a mentor and colleague who has become a friend. Alam, an accomplished and peripatetic photographer, journalist, and activist, invited me to Dhaka to join a team charged with setting up a media academy for Bangladeshi journalists. Such an academy had been part of his plan for years, but he’d been consumed by other projects—building a career as well as a world-class photo agency, a degree-granting school of photography, and an international photo festival.

Southeast Asia - battles ahead to defend media freedom

This year, in the first three weeks of January alone, we have already been given a sampling of the battles that must be waged to defend the press and journalists of the region.

With chairmanship of ASEAN in 2010 transferring from Thailand to Vietnam, the big question is, how far will ASEAN and AICHR go in recognizing press freedom as a legitimate agenda for the region’s leaders? The answer to that will only begin to be hinted at and explored over the course of the coming months. But it will be crucial to everything, from covering the elections in Burma and addressing impunity in the Philippines to protecting the integrity of the Internet as a democratic medium throughout the region.

20 diting tips for creating compelling TV and radio packages

Structure, timing, positioning and letting the interview breathe are all essential elements for ensuring a TV or radio package works. Don't try to cram too much into an item, perhaps just three points, and steer clear of noddies and walking shots for TV, they are boring. The following points should give those starting off in journalism a few tips to help produce coherent and informative packages. Please feel free to add comments.

20 interviewing tips for journalists

Journalists setting off for an interview need to be prepared. Try to keep it to three questions - at a push make it four on the basis that if you haven't worked out in three questions what you want the person to say you never will. Always be polite and thank the interviewee at the end. Never look at your notes and always listen to what the other person is saying in case they say something startling.20 interviewing tips by Jaldeep Katwala.

How to find out whether you have been plagiarised

Plagiarism Today sets out tips on how to find out whether the stuff you write has been nicked. Don't just search the title of the piece, pick a specific line that is phrased in a fairly unique way, put quotes around it and Google it.

I can't figure out whether it would be more dissapointing to find you hadn't been plagiarised than it would be to find loads of cases.

Interviews wanted at jailed Baku blogger's London protest

I'll have a small video camera at the demonstration outside the Azerbaijan Embassy on Friday Jan 22 @ 1pm.

The idea is to get short, 30" clips from some of those who made the effort to turn up.

The interviews will go into an article on Media Helping Media (MHM) and on MHM's You Tube site and our Facebook Group.

So if you see me with a small Flip camera and want to send a message, please say hi.
